How to deal with Greasy Garage Floors and garage floors
Grease and oil spots are unsightly in a garage, but the real problem is that
people step in them and bring the gunk into the house. An old cookie sheet
or cake pan filled with cat litter or sand and placed at the drip site will collect
leaking grease or oil. If you don't have cat litter or sand handy, use a piece
of corrugated cardboard to fit the cookie sheet and change it as necessary.
Staple heavy-duty aluminum foil to a piece of corrugated cardboard for a
disposable drip pad.
Clean up oil and grease spots by applying paint thinner, then covering them
with cat litter, dry cement, or sand, and letting the absorbant remain on the
spot overnight. Sweep up the absorbent material and repeat the process if you
have to.
Other absorbent materials include baking soda and cornmeal. Just sprinkle
on and sweep off, repeating the process until you've got a clean-enough garage
floor.
If the absorbents don't work, try dousing the spot with full-strength laundry
bleach and wiping up the excess with rags or paper towels. CAUTION: Wear
protective gloves when you're using bleach or other strong chemicals.
If you still can't get rid of the stain and it bothers you, paint a wide black
stripe the width of the space between your car tires and use the stripe as a
centering aid.
